Today, I thought it would be fun to share some of the “high-maintenance” things I do every month that actually make me more low-maintenance in the long run. Now, I’d never call myself a low-maintenance girlie (let’s be real), but dedicating a little time here and there has made my daily routine so much easier.
Monthly Integrative Facials
I’ve talked about my monthly facials before, but nothing has been more transformative in my routine. Back in January 2024, I started noticing how dry and dull my skin looked—and this wasn’t your typical winter dryness. My skin barrier was totally out of whack, and I knew I needed professional help.
That’s when I started seeing Molly at Evolve Skin Studio. What I love most is that every facial is tailored to my skin’s needs at the moment. Some months it’s microcurrent, other times a light peel, or even lymphatic drainage. Whatever the treatment, it’s been the best addition to my self-care routine.
Brow Tinting
This is a newer step for me, and it’s been such a game-changer in cutting down the time I spend filling in my brows. And no, before you assume I overplucked in my youth—nope! I’ve just always had sparse brows. Without tinting (or filling them in), my eyebrows completely disappear in flash photos.
I’ve only ever used one kit—Godefroy—and I swear by it. It’s made specifically for brows, and I trust the results every time. Some people use hair dye, which works for them, but I prefer sticking with this product. I tint once a month, just enough to darken them up and give my brow pencil a little break.
Toning Shampoo & Conditioner
Being blondish, toning is essential. I like my hair with a warm glow, but sometimes it leans a little strawberry blonde in certain light—not the look I’m going for. That’s when I reach for the Amika Bust Your Brass shampoo and conditioner, letting both sit for about five minutes once a week. They tone down any orangey hues and leave my blonde looking fresh between salon visits.
I only get balayage twice a year, so in between appointments, I also book a professional toner. It gives the same effect, but with results that last much longer.
Cuticle Care
No one talks about cuticle care enough! Earlier this year, I was struggling with brittle nails that broke constantly—it was so frustrating. With a nail strengthener and regular cuticle oil, my nails have improved dramatically over the past couple of months.
I make my own oil blend with two parts jojoba oil and one part olive oil, and it’s been working wonders. Of course, you could buy one pre-made, but I love this simple DIY.
Red Light Mask
My red light mask has become my moment of calm before the workday starts. I use it four to five times a week, and I’ve noticed a real difference in my skin’s radiance and in fading dark spots from past breakouts. I use the HigherDOSE mask (which I’ve shared in my Top Picks blog post if you want more details), and it’s honestly one of my favorite at-home tools.
Microcurrent
Way back in 2020, I worked with a company called ZIIP, and as part of that project, I got to try their microcurrent/nanocurrent device. I still have it today, and it’s truly stood the test of time.
After applying the conductive gel, I select my treatment in the mobile app and let the device do its thing. I really feel like it’s helped keep my face clear, plump, and sculpted. My go-to programs are Founder’s Favorite, Problem Solver, and Jowls, which I try to rotate through three to four times a week.
I hope this inspires you to carve out a little self-care in your weekly routine. These steps might seem “extra,” but they actually make everyday life feel easier—and a little more fun.
Until next time,
