Happy Friday! How crazy is it that August is almost here?! For today’s blog post, I’m rocking something I’ve never worn before: a prairie dress. I’m sure you’ve all seen the Victorian-era prairie dresses reminiscent of those worn in “Little Women” or “Little House On The Prairie.”
Truthfully, the reason why I decided to buy this dress was because I felt like I could jump into a horse-drawn carriage and head out west to the prairies while wearing it. I have a great imagination, right?!
Shop this dress here.
Any who, I like to consider this piece as a modern day prairie dress. The little flutter sleeves and v-neck detailing make it youthful and feminine: two things that I always tend to look for in statement pieces like this.
I had my eye on this dress for a few weeks, but like everything, I didn’t want to try it on until I had “the feeling.” Don’t know what I mean? Let me paint a picture for you. I work in retail. I see beautiful clothes all week. I’m always ready to buy clothes, even if I have no idea where I’m going to wear them. Anyone who knows me will recall that I always use the excuse, “But I need it for my future life.” I always tend to say this when a.) I buy something really random, or b.) When I decide that I don’t need to buy something.
I guess what I’m trying to get at about “the feeling” is that 90% of the time that I’m shopping, I’m in fantasy mode. I’m not shopping for anything in particular, so I feel like I can just shop for anything and everything. It isn’t until I take a step back and think about whether or not I will legitimately wear an item multiple times, that I decide whether to buy it or not.
A lot of stores now are in that in between summer and fall season, so it’s hard to find items when I’m already prepared for fall. Ultimately, I decided that this dress was something I could easily wear into fall and early winter. I’m so glad that I bought it because it’s unlike anything else that I have in my closet.
I’ve definitely been leaning more toward midi length dresses as of recently because I’ve found that my height makes it extremely difficult to buy dresses that aren’t midi. I can’t even begin to tell you how many dresses are in my closet right now that are somehow too short for me to wear in a professional setting. It’s not cool!
I don’t know if I’m still growing, or what exactly is going on, BUT midi dresses are my jam nowadays because I don’t have to worry about them becoming too short!
Back on track to talk about this dress, I love the detailing of the buttons, the belt around the waist and the unexpected slit in the front. Oftentimes, I find that some dresses have too many elements going on, but I think this one is just right.
I will say that this dress may be longer on a lot of people then it is on me, so if that’s not the look you’re going for, I would try it on in-person before buying. I rarely online shop, other than for beauty products and random things, but trying things on in person that you see other influencers wearing is so much easier than buying online and having to deal with the return/refund process!
Well, it’s time to go get ready for my voyage to the prairie. Okay, maybe not, but a girl can dream! I hope you all have a fun weekend full of good vibes, yummy food and great friends!
Until next time,
Alicia <3
