I feel like I haven’t written in forever, even though I just posted on here last week! For today’s blog post, I wanted to focus on the idea of having confidence in the workplace, especially when it’s your first job post graduation. I was immediately intrigued by this topic because it’s something that I’ve been going through with my first job!
I’m a copywriter for my full time job, which is something that I absolutely love. It gives me a platform to be creative and strategic in the way that I write content for different companies. But, writing content for a full work week requires me to stare at a computer screen ALL DAY. Now, I’m sure you’re like, “What does that have to do with having confidence at work?” I’m getting there, just bear with me!
Flashback to a couple months ago, I came across Felix Gray, which is a company that makes computer glasses. It was started by a fellow Ohio University alum, so I was immediately sold by the idea of buying a pair for myself down the road.
Back to the future, about a month into my new job, I had a déjà vu moment and remembered Felix Gray and their computer glasses, and knew that I needed to order them if I was going to be on my computer. So, I ordered the Faraday pair with the blue light filter, and patiently awaited for their arrival!
If you’re unfamiliar with Felix Gray or computer glasses, I’ll fill you in! By the way, this is not sponsored — I’m just really obsessed with their product and the results they have proven to me!
Staring at a screen, whether that be your laptop, phone or tablet, can have negative effects on your eyes over a period of time. Digital Eye Strain is a real thing, and some of the most common complaints that people who are experiencing it include eye strain, eye fatigue, blurred vision, and dry eyes. Felix Gray’s computer glasses filter blue light that is emitted from your device’s screen, which helps to mediate the negative effects that screen time can have.
How these computer glasses relate to being confident at work: I started to feel like I couldn’t create the content that I knew I was capable of creating because my eyes were so irritated from staring at my computer screen. But, once I started wearing my Felix Gray’s at work, I felt like Superwoman because I could be on my computer all day without the negative effects that I had prior to wearing them.
When you get out of college and you’re either looking for a job or you’re gearing up to start your first job, chances are you’re a little bit intimidated by the idea of being in the real world. I know that I was! Having a real job, and being solely responsible for that job with no safety net to fall back on can be a daunting concept to wrap your mind around.
Starting a new job is not easy.I can tell you that from experience! Whether it’s a job in retail, at an office, or anywhere in between, it’s totally normal to be confused, scared and excited after your first day on the job. But you should be mindful, and take a moment to remember that any fear or hesitation that you experienced during your first few days on the job will go away in time, if the job is the right fit.
As a creative individual, it can be hard when you’re expected to create magical things all day, every day. To this day, I still worry that one day I’ll wake up and not be able to think of anything creative to write about! But, I’ve taken the time to be mindful, and enocurage myself that I am creative and I can do whatever it is that I dream to do.
Your first job is going to be a lot of responsibility and it may be a wake up call for some of you. But, that doesn’t mean that you should give up when the going gets tough! For me, I started to feel more confident at work when I took on each challenge or project with a refreshed outlook that I could do it. You were or will be hired for a reason. Be confident in that reason and don’t lose hope in yourself!
It’s been a little over three months since I started my job, and I already feel like I’ve learned more about writing than I did in four years of college. That’s the thing about the real world, it’s scary as shit, but you will learn so much in a short amount of time. It’s important to never lose confidence in yourself out here in the real world, because if you let the negative bug take over, you’re going to dig yourself into a rabbit hole that will be really difficult to climb out of.
I know it can be difficult to be optimistic and confident all the time, but just know that you are capable of anything that you put your mind to. You can create works of art.You can be whoever you want to be. And most importantly, you can be successful. It just takes hard work, perseverance and a positive attitude.
Well, that’s all that I’ve got for ya today! I have some super fun blog posts coming up in the next few weeks that I had so much fun taking photos for, so stay tuned!
