Tips & Tricks for the Ultimate Lipstick Look

Hello there, friends!

I hope that you all had a lovely Thanksgiving weekend! It was so nice to be back in my hometown, and I can’t wait to hangout with my college friends the next time that I’m home!

Onto today’s blog post! I’m focusing on my tips and trick for creating the ultimate lipstick look. I’ve been wearing lipstick every single day for the past five years. Crazy, right!?

When I first started to experiment with lip color, I was really into matte lip glosses and products of that nature, but over time I found that they didn’t provide the moisture that my lips needed.

Cue the lipstick!

Featured Lipsticks:

Revlon (Naughty Plum), Revlon (Sassy Mauve), & Albeit (Peony)

The first lipstick brand that I ever tried was Clinique, and to this day I will always recommend their lipsticks to people who are nervous about experimenting with lipstick in their daily makeup routine. Clinique’s lip products come in a number of bold or subtle color options, which is awesome for anyone wanting to try out this trend!

For me, lipstick makes me feel confident, and it’s the final component of every look I put together. For someone who loves lipstick as much as I do, you would think that I had a massive stash of different lip colors at my disposal, but I don’t!

I’m all about using each lipstick that I buy for at least a month before I buy a new one! Each of my lipsticks tends to last for a season or so, and then it’s time to switch it up!

In addition to Clinique, two of my other go-to brands of lipstick are Revlon and Albeit. Obviously Revlon is a household name, but I’m one of my only friends who uses this brand of lipstick! What I love about their lip colors is that they come in such an array of colors, and the formula is super moisturizing, which is huge for me.

Albeit is another brand that’s sold at Anthropologie! Whenever I’m working there, people often ask me what Albeit is all about, so I’m very familiar with their products! Albeit is a brand that’s exclusive to Anthropologie, and they offer a bunch of high-end makeup products for under $40. Their lipsticks are so pigmented, and they keep the lips glossy without making them sticky!

Now, I want to share some of my tips and tricks for lipstick application! Whether you’re a lipstick-wearing enthusiast, or you’re a little shy about trying it out, I’ve got you covered!

Onward!

Tip #1: Always, Always, Always Remember to Put on Lip Balm Every Night

You may be thinking, “Why is this relevant?” But, I promise that it is! You can’t expect to have a solid palette for seamless lipstick application if your lips are irritated, dry or cracked. If you remember to do anything before you go to bed, always remember to swipe on some lip balm! I particularly love Carmex or Burt’s Bees, but any moisturizing lip balm will do!

When you make a routine out of applying lip balm every night, you’re setting yourself up for days of amazing lipstick wear!

Tip #2: Always Apply Lipstick Using the Edge, Not Smashing the Center of the Color Onto the Lips

When you tilt your lipstick and simply use the edge to apply the outline and fill your lips in, it gives you so much more control over how much you use. I know that sometimes when you’re applying lipstick, you’re thinking about applying it the same way you would lip balm, but you’ve got to have a lil bit of a strategy to it!

I personally don’t use lip liner because let’s be real — I’m a broke college grad and I can’t afford to be buying random things LOL. I also don’t think that lip liner is necessary whatsoever. If you take your time to apply your lipstick using the edge of the color, you’ll be good to go!

Tip #3: Be Sure to Set Your Lipstick Using Finishing Powder

This is actually something that I just recently started doing and have noticed a difference in how long the color stays pigmented on my lips! After applying your lipstick, simply grab a tissue and place it over your lips. Take a fluffy makeup brush, dip it into a translucent finishing powder, and dab the finishing powder onto the tissue that’s on your lips.

By doing this, you’re removing excess color, which prevents smearing, and you’re taking steps toward avoiding the lovely lipstick-on-the-teeth dilemma. Since I started doing this, I’ve noticed that I don’t have to reapply as soon as I used to because the color remains super pigmented longer. I talked about the finishing powder that I use in this month’s Top Picks, so you can check that out here!

Tip #4: Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment with Different Lipstick Colors

I honestly think that my favorite part of wearing lipstick is the fun in finding cool colors that I like. I usually spend around fifteen minutes in Ulta or CVS just looking at the different lipstick colors to decide which shade I’m really feeling that day. After several minutes of deliberation, I’ll buy my next lipstick!

That’s my process every single time that I buy a new color! I think it’s so fun to play with your lip color, and you’ll never know if you like a shade or not unless you try it, so have fun with it!
