Bringing Back the Scrunchie

You read that right — today’s post is all about my infatuation with hair scrunchies and how I’m styling them!

I’ve got three different hairstyles that I’ll be showcasing, so I hope you’ll be just as convinced by the awesomeness of a scrunchie as I am after reading this!

What I love about scrunchies is how gentle they are on the hair. I don’t know about you, but I always feel like I’m ripping my hair out when I use other ponytail holders. I also worry about how damaging ordinary ponytail holders can be.

I know that scrunchies have kind of fallen to the wayside as a fad instead of a trend item, but honestly, who follows trends anyway? I know that I don’t! Just because they’re not a trend item, doesn’t mean that people aren’t selling them.

There are tons of different hair scrunchie options on the market right now if you know where to look! Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, and even Forever 21 have awesome options.

If I’ve convinced you to jump on my hair scrunchie bandwagon, I’ve mapped out my favorite hairstyles with scrunchies, as well as the products I use to achieve them.

What You’ll Need:

1 1/2 in. Curling Iron (Conair, here), Heat Protectant Spray (It’s a 10, here), Curl Gel (It’s a 10, here), & Hair Scrunchies (Anthropologie, here)

Quick rundown about each of the above products:

  1. Love, love, love this curling iron. What attracted me to this particular one was the price, being as it’s under $30! Besides that, it has been my go-to styling tool for the past two years. Proof that you don’t always have to buy expensive products to achieve flawless hair!
  2. This heat protectant spray has been a necessity of mine since the brand It’s a 10 hit the shelves at drugstores and beauty supply stores. Although it’s a little pricey, I still think it’s worth it. If you’re like me and want your hair to be as healthy as possible, this is a great product to use.
  3. This curl defining gel by It’s a 10 is one that I just recently started using and I really like it for when I need my curls to last all day. It doesn’t make my hair crunchy, it smells great and it adds a little bit of shine to my hair.
  4. This is the first and only set of scrunchies that I currently own. I love how soft the satin fabric is and I think that the bow detailing is really ethereal and fun.

Style No. 1: Half-Up Ponytail

Achieving this look is all about mastering the proportions of your hair — I’ll explain. The trick to getting that perfect updo is understanding how much hair to put into your mini pony. What I’ve found to work is simply taking the hair from in front of my ears, up, and pulling it into a mini pony on a diagonal.

Instead of doing a half-up style where you’re pulling the hair horizontally across the hair line, try diagonally! I’ve found that this helps to balance how much hair is in the pony so it’s not too heavy.

I knotted the scrunchie three times to achieve this volume. I always pull a couple pieces of hair out to make it look more casual.

Style No. 2: Half-Up Bun

This particular look can be achieved by creating the same half-up ponytail I mentioned in the previous hairstyle. Instead of tying the hair into a ponytail once you’ve pulled the hair up, pull the scrunchie through the hair once. From there, you’ll want to tie the ponytail into a messy bun.

This hairstyle is definitely more trial-and-error than the previous, so just be patient! Sometimes you’ve got to do it a couple times before you get the bun just right, but when you do, you’ll love the outcome!

Style No. 3: The Classic Ponytail

img_2912img_2913img_2915

As you’ve probably noticed on my blog, I literally never wear my hair up. I’m just more of a hair-down kinda gal. But, since finding these scrunchies, I definitely plan on wearing it up more often!

All I did for this look was simply pull my hair into a low pony, pull some pieces out in the front and wah-la! The perfect pony! This look is ideal for anyone, including me, who hates wearing their hair up for the sole reason that they don’t like how regular ponytail holders pull on their hair.

Well, that’s all that I have for you today! I hope that you consider hair scrunchies as a ponytail holder alternative like I have!
