The Kimono Style Guide

Hello folks!

I’m back on the blog today to chat about one of my favorite pieces in my closet — a kimono!

As someone who currently works part time in retail, I’m often asked how to wear a kimono and when you do wear one, what you’re supposed to wear with it. Well, that’s what I’m here to share with you all today!

Whenever I’m given the task of styling a kimono (more often than one would think), I think of it as being a sweater — that way I’m able to grasp a better understanding on what I can wear with it that’s currently in my closet.

There’s no need to go out and buy an entirely new outfit just to have something to coordinate with a kimono. Rummage through your own closet and pull out some of your favorite pieces and pair them together for the ultimate-good-vibin’ look!

I’ll be offering three variations of styling for one kimono. I think that my favorite thing about this piece is that it allows you to blend different textures and patterns along with it.

Well, here is my rundown of outfits!

1.) Kimono + Graphic Tee + Jeans

Outfit Details:

Kimono (Nordstrom Rack), Merci Tee (Anthropologie), Tassel Jeans (Anthropologie), Sandals (Birkenstocks, similar here)

Grab your favorite graphic tee, some rockin’ jeans and you’re ready to work it in a kimono! I paired mine with my favorite Merci tee and these tasseled jeans from Anthropologie. The graphic tee complements the colors of the kimono and I think that the jeans just add another fun element to the entirety of the look.

Don’t worry too much about sleeve length when it comes to styling a kimono. Honestly, I think that wearing either a short sleeve or a long sleeve tee would look awesome.

2.) Kimono + Striped Tank + Chinos

Outfit Details:

Striped Tank (Anthropologie, similar here), Pink Chinos (Anthropologie), Agate Necklace (Black Market Minerals, similar here), Chelsea Boots (Clarks Outlet, similar here)

Now this is where the term pattern play comes to life. I absolutely love this combination because it’s so unexpected! In my opinion, stripes are the most versatile pattern out there. So, you shouldn’t be afraid to blend them with other patterned or textured pieces.

For me, it’s kind of like a game — try all sorts of outfits with stripes and see how my friends react to them. So far, all positive results!

Back on topic, these chinos are by Anthropologie’s Pilcro brand, and I own three pairs of them for a reason. They are just as comfortable as pajama pants without looking like pajama pants. This particular pair has a burgundy stripe going down the side, which you can’t see in the pictures. Despite that, I love how the pop of pink brings out the colors throughout the kimono.

3.) Kimono + Eyelet Tank Dress

Outfit Details:

Eyelet Dress (American Eagle Outfitters, similar here), Statement Necklace (Free People, similar here), White Strap Block Heel (Jeffrey Campbell, similar here)

All I have to say is that this is literally the most simple combination to wear with a kimono!!! If you have any solid colored dresses that have been sitting around in your closet, now is the time to break them out!

Not to mention, this combination is also probably the most comfortable option for anyone who just purchased a kimono and has no clue what to wear with it. This was the initial way that I styled this kimono when I purchased it because I, too, had no idea how to wear one.

With anything you wear, you’ve just got to be confident in yourself and in what you’ve put together and anything you combine with your kimono will look incredible!
