Well, the transition from fall to winter happened a lot quicker than I had expected! I’m not sure about you, but here in the Midwest, we’ve been absolutely pummeled with snow. And by that, I mean around a foot of snow. Craziness!

It never ceases to amaze me that each year poses completely different circumstances for how to stay warm and stylish during the winter months. One day you need a puffy jacket and the next you need just a warm sweater. It’s all over the place! But it’s so important to make sure to pick up a few key pieces to put on standby for when the weather does decide to get incredibly chilly.

My go-to items this winter?

A puffy winter jacket filled with down feathers

A warm and fuzzy sweater

A winter-ready hat or ear warmer

Patterned mittens or gloves

Let me just start off with the first item on the list: The puffy jacket. I can only guess what some of you are thinking … “Why in the world would I buy a jacket like that. It’s ugly, it’s too bulky, it’s uncomfortable.” I get! I used to feel the exact same way.

Growing up in the Midwest, it’s a necessity for you to have a puffy winter jacket. Everyone has one. Literally. It’s extremely difficult to make it through a winter without one.

Well, when I was a senior in high school, I decided to boycott my lime green puffy jacket and opt for a stylish peacoat instead. For some reason, I was obsessed with only wearing trendy clothes, and apparently this peacoat I had was the trendiest thing in the world in my eyes.

Anyways, everything was going fine and dandy until we had one of the worst winter storms seen in a really long time. And there’s me, walking around in my bright pink peacoat and scarf, completely soaked from the snow that was pelting me the second that I stepped outside.

Needless to say, when I finally succumbed to the realization that there was no way I could last all winter in that peacoat, I went searching for my lime green, extra puffy marshmallow jacket. Well, I rocked that thing for the rest of winter. Low key wish I still had that jacket, but I suppose this Via Spiga one will do!

Next up is the warm, fuzzy sweater. If I could promote the purchase of any clothing item within my own closet, it would be this sweater. It’s literally like wearing a blanket! Couldn’t get any better than that if you ask me.

It’s definitely a statement sweater, and I knew that from the get-go. When I initially bought it, I was a little bit nervous wearing it because I thought I would look like a furry animal. Well, maybe I do a little bit, but I still love it!

I found this particular sweater at Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale, but you can find your own at ASOS, Urban Outfitters, or Forever 21. The biggest thing to remember about this super soft fabric is that you should NOT put it in the dryer. Let it hang dry on a rack or else it will shrink!

Onto the next one: Hat!

I only just recently started wearing hats because it’s taken me awhile to feel comfortable wearing them. I’ll be honest, I have a really big head! My face is also decently round so those two factors make shopping for hats like finding a Bobby-pin in the grass.

I’ve realized that the problem isn’t my large head, it’s that I’m picking out the wrong hats for my face shape. My best piece of advice is to bring along a trusted friend or family member when you go hat shopping!

When it comes to winter hats, try and look for one that is fleece-lined to ensure extra warmth! This Betsy Johnson hat is great because it covers the entire head and the ears. Obviously, if you don’t live in the Midwest or the Northeast, you probably won’t be needing a hat of this magnitude. But if you do reside in these areas, you have to get a hat! It’s a must!

Final must-have: Mittens/Gloves!

I am obsessed with this particular pair because of how colorful and versatile they are. If you’re looking for a super cute and eccentric pair of gloves or mittens, give Sundance Catalog a glance. Their products are seriously magical and so different from things you would see at the mall.

Anyways, having a really solid pair of gloves or mittens is vital to making it through a cold winter with all of your fingers and nails intact. If you’re anything like me and lose something the second that you set it down, buy two pairs just to be safe. That way, when you end up losing one of them, you won’t be without any.

Stylishly Good Vibes’ Bit of Advice:

Don’t let the cold temps put you in a funk!

It’s a lot easier said than done, but I find that this time of year has a way of knocking us off of our routine track and throwing us a couple of curveballs, too.

Find ways each day to do the things that you love. For me, this is ensuring that I go running or do yoga at least four times a week. This helps me to clear my head and de-stress, not to mention all physical activity helps to lift your mood, so keep that in mind!

Being aware of how you feel inside and out is a reflection of the things that you are doing to be healthier and happier in your life. Just be sure to take a few deep breaths and not take anything too seriously!
